Nausea is an unpleasant feeling that can be caused by many factors, including pregnancy, motion sickness, anxiety, alcohol, and medicines. Here are some things you can try to help relieve nausea:
-
Ginger: Ginger is a popular natural remedy for nausea. You can eat foods containing ginger, such as ginger biscuits, or drink ginger or peppermint tea.
-
Peppermint: Peppermint aromatherapy or tea may also help reduce nausea.
-
Lemon: Sniffing or sucking on a lemon can help stop the feeling of nausea.
-
Fluids: Sip fluids throughout the day to prevent dehydration. If water turns your stomach, try drinking decaf tea or water with fresh fruit slices. Drinking small amounts of clear, sweetened liquids such as soda, fruit juices (except orange and grapefruit), and ice pops can also help prevent vomiting.
-
Bland diet: Following a bland diet may help prevent nausea from worsening or stop vomiting. The most commonly recommended diet for recovering from nausea is the BRAT diet, which includes bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. You can also eat small amounts of saltines, plain pasta or noodles, plain baked or mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and hard-boiled eggs. Avoid fried foods, dairy products like cheese and milk, meat, and foods high in fiber until nausea subsides.
-
Avoid triggers: Avoid eating or cooking strong-smelling food, hot, fried, or greasy food, and dont eat too quickly. Dont have a large drink with meals, and dont lie down soon after eating. Also, avoid wearing clothes that are tight around your waist or tummy.
If youre feeling sick and do not feel better in a few days, or if you often feel sick, see a GP. They can look for the cause and suggest treatments, including anti-sickness medicine if needed. If youre also being sick (vomiting), you could become dehydrated. Call 111 for advice if you cannot see a GP. Call 999 if you suddenly feel sick and have chest pain that feels tight or heavy, headache and sensitivity to light or sound, migraine, dizziness, labyrinthitis, or vertigo.
