American ice hockey player Adam Johnson died on October 28, 2023, after a "freak accident" during a game in England. Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered a slashed neck during the second period of the game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. Spectators were asked to leave the arena, and the match was immediately suspended. Johnson was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but was later pronounced dead. Johnson was 29 years old and had previously played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His death has led to discussions about cut protection in ice hockey.
