The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, is the hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining," and it hosted the novelist and his wife for one night in October 1974. However, the exterior shots in the movie were filmed at the Timberline Lodge in Mt Hood, Oregon. The interior sets were partly based on the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, California, and partly constructed in the studio at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England. The Stanley Kubrick film based on Kings novel was not filmed at the Stanley Hotel. King was not happy with the Kubrick adaptation, which wasnt true to his book, and in 1997, he adapted his famous novel into a television mini-series and filmed it entirely at the Stanley Hotel.
