Akhand Jyot is an oil or ghee lamp that is lit continuously for 9-10 days during Navratri in reverence of the Mother Divine (Durga) . If the Akhand Jyot goes off, it should be relit with a prayer to the almighty and by connecting with the eternal light within your consciousness. Here are some tips and rules to follow to keep the Akhand Jyot going:

  • Use cotton wicks of good quality to light the holy flame.
  • Keep the Akhand Jyot away from the direction of the breeze, window, door, or any other place where it may get extinguished due to a sudden flow of air.
  • Do not light the lamp near the toilet, bathroom, or any other inauspicious place.
  • Do not leave the Akhand Jyot burning at a place unattended, as it is regarded as being disrespectful to the Mother Divine.
  • Do not let the holy flame blow off due to the breeze while adjusting the flame or any other reason.
  • Do not use sunflower oil in the lamp.
  • Do not displace the Akhand Jyot from its place for the 9 days of Navratri.
  • If the wick goes off, do not reburn it. Place a new wick beside the old one.

In case the Akhand Jyot goes off, it is important to relight it as soon as possible to maintain the continuity of the holy flame.
