According to Hindu beliefs, Pitru Paksha is a period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors through food offerings. It is considered inauspicious due to the death rites performed during the ceremony, known as Shraddha or Tarpana. If someone dies during Pitru Paksha, it is believed that they attain salvation and are considered very lucky. The gates of heaven are said to be open during this time, and the soul of the person who dies in the Shraddha Paksha tries to connect with the souls of their departed relatives, so that their journey to Yamlok passes easily and their troubles are pacified. The important thing is that Shraddha should be performed on the date of the deceased persons death. If the date of death is not known, Shraddha can be performed on the final day of Pitru Paksha, known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya.
