Duke Ellington was primarily a pianist, composer, and big-band leader. Although he was a fine pianist, his real instrument was his orchestra, and he wrote for the players themselves. Each player had his own sound, from Harry Carneys vibrato-rich baritone saxophone to the stratospheric shouts of Cat Andersons trumpet. Ellingtons band consisted of six brass instruments, four reeds, and a rhythm section of four players. He composed pieces intended to feature a specific instrumentalist, such as "Jeeps Blues" for Johnny Hodges, "Yearning for Love" for Lawrence Brown, "Trumpet in Spades" for Rex Stewart, "Echoes of Harlem" for Cootie Williams, and "Clarinet Lament" for Barney Bigard. Ellington wrote over 1,000 compositions, and his music stretched into various other genres, including blues, gospel, film scores, popular, and classical.
