In rugby, a 50:22 kick is a type of kick that was introduced as part of a batch of law trials aimed at making rugby a safer and more exciting game. If an attacking team kicks the ball from anywhere in their own half and it bounces inside the oppositions 22 before then bouncing into touch, the kicking team gets the throw at the resultant lineout. The idea behind this law is to create more attacking space and reduce defensive line speed by encouraging the defending team to put more players in the backfield. The 50:22 kick is one of five new laws that were adopted by World Rugby in July 2022.
