5GE is a label that AT&T puts on some of its phones that simply means that its connected to their 5G Evolution network. It is not actual 5G connectivity, but rather a slightly faster LTE network that uses a combination of 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM to provide faster speeds in some areas. The 5GE icon is merely cosmetic and does not indicate that the phone is actually connected to a 5G network. The 5GE label has caused confusion among some AT&T customers who might think their phone has magically switched to true 5G speeds. AT&T stopped advertising 5GE in 2020, long after it released its actual 5G network, but continues to use the abbreviation because it makes their service.
