The 801 area code is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) serving Salt Lake City and the four surrounding counties of the Wasatch Front in north-central Utah. It covers cities such as Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo, Orem, Ogden, and Sandy, West Jordan, Layton. The area code is located in the Mountain timezone. It was one of the original 86 area codes created by AT&T and the Bell System in 1947 and originally served the entire state of Utah. In 1997, area code 801 was split, creating the need to update some of the phone numbers to area code 435. In 2009, area code 385 was created and is currently an overlay to 801.
Some of the major cities and communities served by area code 801 include Salt Lake City, West Valley City, West Jordan, Murray, Riverton, Kearns, Cottonwood Heights, and Midvale.
