In rugby, a 50:22 kick is a type of kick where an attacking team kicks the ball from anywhere in their own half and it bounces inside the oppositions 22 before then bouncing into touch. If successful, the kicking team gets the throw at the resultant lineout, giving them a prime attacking position. This law was introduced in 2021 as part of World Rugbys welfare-based law trials. The hope was that with this law, more space would be freed up across the pitch as players drop back to field tactical kicks. The law aims to reduce the number of scrums, reward good defense, encourage counter-attack, and increase the rate of ball in play.
