A 3G pitch is a type of synthetic surface used for sports that replicates natural grass in playing characteristics. It is made up of three elements: synthetic turf, sand infill, and rubber infill. The synthetic turf is made up of grass-like fibers attached to a special backing, and the sand and rubber infill help to keep the turf pile upright and make the surface less abrasive when in contact with skin, resulting in fewer friction burns. 3G pitches are typically between 35mm-65mm in pile height. They are designed to offer similar playing characteristics to playing on natural turf, mimicking the ball bounce and ball roll.
Primary sports played on 3G pitches are football, rugby union, rugby league, lacrosse, and American football. They are extremely durable and safer for players, minimizing friction burns and injuries. 3G pitches can also be installed with a shock absorbent pad underneath to meet performance and testing criteria such as the FIFA Quality Concept, World Rugby Regulation 22, BS-EN, and RFL.
Prior to 3G pitches being developed, there were 1G and 2G pitches. 1G pitches are non-infilled surfaces, also known as astroturf, and 2G pitches are sand-based pitches primarily used for hockey.
