A 50:22 kick is a rugby law that rewards the attacking team with a line-out if they kick from their own half into the enemy 22 with at least one bounce in-field. The law was introduced in 2021 as part of a batch of law trials aimed at improving player welfare. The idea behind the 50:22 kick is to create more space on the pitch as defenders drop back to field tactical kicks, taking them out of the defensive line that is often strung across the field. The law has been trialed in various competitions, including the National Rugby Championship in Australia, where it was used 14 times over the course of 31 games. The law has been made permanent by World Rugby and will be in full effect at the Womens World Cup in New Zealand later this year, as well as the mens equivalent at France 2023.
