A fifth-generation fighter is a jet fighter aircraft classification that includes major technologies developed during the first part of the 21st century. As of 2023, these are the most advanced fighters in operation. The characteristics of a fifth-generation fighter are not universally agreed upon, and not every fifth-generation type necessarily has them all. However, typical fifth-generation characteristics include stealth, high maneuverability, supercruise, advanced avionics, and networked data fusion, enabling situation awareness on the battlefield. The primary armament is held in an internal bay to further preserve the airframes radar signature. The first fifth-generation fighter to reach service was the American Lockheed F-22 Raptor. Other fifth-generation fighter jets include the F-35 Lightning II, the Chinese Chengdu J-20, the Russian Sukhoi Su-57, the Indian HAL AMCA, and the South Korean KAI KF-X.
