The term "808" refers to a drum machine manufactured by Roland Corporation between 1980 and 1983, called the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer. It was a commercial failure, but it eventually gained a cult following and became a defining feature of hip-hop, pop, EDM, and modern electronic production. The 808 is characterized by a punchy low-end subby-ness that is easily tunable to different pitches. The original TR-808 comprised programmable kick, snare, low tom, mid tom, hi tom, clap, cowbell, open hi-hat, closed hi-hat, low conga, mid conga, hi conga, clave, rimshot, maracas, and cymbal sounds. The 808s bass-heavy kick is often used to describe the bass in a song. The 808s influence can still be heard today in a variety of genres, from techno and trance to dubstep and trap.
