A baby alpaca is called a cria. The term "cria" comes from the Spanish word "cría," which means "baby". Alpaca mothers usually give birth to their babies in the morning so that the crias have a chance to walk around and dry off before the temperature drops in the evening. Crias can weigh up to 18-20 pounds (8-9 kilos) when they are born, and they can stand up shortly after birth. Alpacas are pregnant for 11-12 months, and they usually give birth to only one cria at a time. Twin births are rare and can be dangerous for both the mother and the crias.
