A billing address is an address associated with your credit or debit card account. It is where you receive your credit card statements and is used to verify your credit card details. When you apply for a credit card online, the address you include on your application becomes your billing address. A billing address looks just like a street address, with a street number and name followed by a city, state, and ZIP code. If you live in a specific apartment or unit, that information will be included in your billing address as well.
Your billing address is used for several purposes, including:
- Receiving your monthly billing statement
- Protecting you through the Address Verification System (AVS) . AVS compares the billing address you entered with the billing address associated with your credit card. If the addresses do not match, the transaction will often be declined.
- Reducing fraud through a service provided by the card networks called AVS. AVS compares the numeric portion of the billing address that you provide to the merchant with the billing address on file with your card issuer.
- Correctly identifying you as the card user and making sure you get your billing and account statements.
It is important to note that a billing address is different from a shipping address. The billing address is where the bill for a product or service is sent so it can be paid by the recipient. The shipping address is where the order is sent. While the billing and shipping addresses can be the same, they are sometimes different.
