A bioengineered food ingredient is a food ingredient that contains genetic material that has been modified through certain laboratory techniques and for which the modification could not be obtained through conventional breeding or found in nature. Bioengineered foods or foods that contain bioengineered food ingredients must be labeled with the bioengineered food disclosure. The labeling is designed to provide consumers more information about their food, and it can be in the form of the words “bioengineered food” or “contains a bioengineered food ingredient” printed on the packaging, one of two logos approved by the USDA, an electronic or digital link (QR code) with the printed instructions to “scan here for more food information” or similar language, or a phone number for more food information. Companies may also choose to disclose that they are using highly refined ingredients that do not contain detectable modified genetic material in the finished product.
