A BiPAP machine, or bilevel positive airway pressure machine, is a type of noninvasive ventilation that helps you breathe. It is used to treat medical conditions that impair breathing, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, pneumonia, asthma flare-up, poor breathing after an operation, and neurological diseases that disturb breathing. The machine delivers air through a mask on your face, and it uses a lower pressure when youre exhaling than when youre inhaling. This is because BiPAP delivers two different levels of air pressure: one for breathing in and one for breathing out. BiPAP is different from other types of ventilators, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which delivers the same amount of pressure as you breathe in and out. BiPAP machines use positive pressure ventilation, meaning they force air into your lungs.
