A bomb cyclone, also known as bombogenesis, is a rapidly intensifying storm that occurs when atmospheric pressure drops at least 24 millibars over a 24-hour period. The term "bomb cyclone" comes from the meteorological term "bombogenesis," which refers to the central pressure of a low-pressure system dropping at least 24 millibars within 24 hours. When a low-pressure system achieves this mark, it becomes known as a "bomb cyclone". The rapid intensification of a storm can result in more severe impacts than what a weaker storm would produce. The hazards of a bomb cyclone can include heavy snow, rain, high winds, and coastal flooding. Bomb cyclones typically form in colder months, from October through March, but they can happen any time of year. The term "bomb cyclone" is not new and can be traced back to a meteorological research paper published in a 1980 edition of Monthly Weather Review.
