The Bordetella vaccine is given to both puppies and adult dogs to protect them from kennel cough, which is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs caused by various airborne bacteria and viruses that spread from dog to dog. Kennel cough is also referred to as Bordetella, because Bordetella bronchiseptica is the most common type of bacteria that causes it. The vaccine is available in two forms: an intranasal spray that your vet will administer in your dogs nose, and an injection. Puppies should receive the injectable version of the Bordetella vaccine between the ages of six to eight weeks. They should then receive a second injectable booster four weeks later, or between the ages of 10 to 12 weeks. Adult dogs should receive a booster form of the Bordetella vaccine every six to twelve months, depending on the risk factors for the dog. If your dog goes to dog parks, boarding facilities, dog daycare, or attends training classes or dog shows, then they are at risk for contracting Bordetella. Many of these facilities require dogs to come with proof of the Bordetella vaccination, so it is in your dog’s best interest for his health and extracurricular activities to get the vaccine. The Bordetella vaccine can prevent kennel cough, and if a dog that has been vaccinated with the Bordetella vaccine still acquires canine cough, they will have a less severe form that resolves faster than a dog who is not vaccinated.
