A candidate is a person who is seeking or being considered for some kind of position, such as being elected to an office, receiving an award or honor, or being admitted to a program or school. The term "nominee" is often used interchangeably with "candidate" and refers to a person who has been officially selected or nominated for a position or award. A presumptive candidate is someone who is predicted to become a formal candidate in the future. The act of being a candidate in a race for either a party nomination or for electoral office is called a "candidacy". In addition to political candidates, the term can also refer to students who are in the process of meeting final requirements for a degree.
