A cappuccino is an espresso-based coffee drink that is traditionally prepared with steamed milk foam. It is made by pouring a single or double shot of espresso into a cup, followed by steamed milk and a layer of milk foam on top. The drink typically contains equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam, and is smaller in volume than a latte, with a thicker layer of microfoam. Variations of the drink involve the use of cream instead of milk, using non-dairy milk substitutes, and flavoring with cinnamon or chocolate powder. The cappuccino originated in Italy and evolved over time with the addition of steamed milk on top. It is typically prepared with an espresso machine, and the milk is heated and textured using the machines steam wand. The foam on top of a cappuccino can be dry or velvety, with the latter having barely visible bubbles.
