A casbah, also spelled kasbah or qasaba, is a North African castle or fortress. It is a walled citadel of many North African cities and towns. The term "casbah" can also refer to the native section of a North African city. The Casbah of Algiers in Algeria is a famous example of a casbah. It is a traditional quarter clustered around the citadel of Algiers, which was proclaimed a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992. During the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962), the Casbah played a central role in the insurgency planning of the National Liberation Front (FLN), from which it planned and executed attacks against French citizens and law enforcement agents in Algeria at the time. The term "casbah" is also used in popular culture, such as in the song "Rock the Casbah" by The Clash, which refers to political terms of two cultures fighting against each other.
