A case management conference (CMC) is a meeting between both sides, the lawyers (if any), and the judge to discuss how to handle a case. It is usually required before a trial date is set, and the judge may decide to set a date during the conference. The purpose of the conference is to get the case moving forward and to discuss the issues involved in the case. During the conference, the judge will try to determine what issues the parties agree or disagree on, whether there is a possibility of a quick settlement, and what future hearings are needed. The judge may also give input concerning the case and set deadlines for discovery, motion practice, and other pretrial matters. The parties must file a Case Management Statement (Form CM-110) at least 15 days before the first case management conference. The statement should include any dates within the next 6 months when the parties will not be available for trial. The conference is an opportunity to discuss and resolve any issues that need to be addressed. The judge may also schedule a Mandatory Settlement Conference or Trial Date during the conference. The conference is usually very brief and occurs every few months throughout the case.
