CER stands for Claim-Evidence-Reasoning, which is a framework used in science classes to help students think critically and support their ideas. It is a three-step process that requires students to make a statement (claim), provide evidence to support their statement, and explain the logic behind their statement (reasoning) . The CER format is used to create a well-structured argument that answers a question about a scientific phenomenon.

The CER format is not limited to science classes and can be used in any content area. The words “claim”, “evidence”, and “reasoning” are directly from the Common Core State Standards. The CER format can be introduced to students by starting with a non-science example, such as a mystery or image, to help them understand what to write in each section.

Teachers should explicitly introduce and model the CER format for their students and provide support throughout the year as students get better at writing explanations. Students should use the CER Graphic Organizer resource as they continue to develop their writing skills and analyze their lab results. By using the CER tool, students are able to explain their scientific understanding and develop their critical thinking skills.
