CFT stands for Child and Family Team. It is a structured, guided discussion with the family and other team members about family strengths, needs, and problems and the impact they have on the safety, permanence, and well-being of the family’s children. The CFT process is intended to be inclusive of multiple formal support systems a family may need, as well as the informal, community, and natural supports that surround a family. The individuals on the CFT provide input into the development of a child and family plan that is strengths-based, needs-driven, and culturally relevant. The size, scope, and intensity of involvement of the team members are determined by the goal established for the child, the needs of the family in providing for the child, and the resources needed to develop an effective service plan. The CFT process provides children and families opportunities to use their experiences and contribute their ideas to help them reach their goals.
