A cherub is a celestial winged being with human, animal, or birdlike characteristics who functions as a throne bearer of God, according to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic literature. Cherubim are described as serving the will of God, performing divine duties in the earthly realm, and their initial responsibility was protecting the Garden of Eden. The numerous depictions of cherubim assign to them many different roles, such as protecting the entrance of the Garden of Eden. The cherubim are the most frequently occurring heavenly creature in the Hebrew Bible, as the Hebrew word appears 91 times. The first occurrence is in the Book of Genesis 3:24. Despite these many references, the role of the cherubim is never explicitly elucidated. In Christianity, the cherubim are ranked among the higher orders of angels and, as celestial attendants of God, continually praise him. Cherubim are also discussed within the midrash literature. The prophet Ezekiel provides a detailed description of cherubim because he encounters four of these heavenly beings in his vision. According to Ezekiel’s report, each cherub has four faces—one human, one lion, one ox, and one eagle. Each has human hands, four wings, straight legs, and hooves that gleam like burnished bronze.
