In New York State, a Class 5 drivers license does not exist. Instead, there are several classes of drivers licenses, including:
-
Class A (Commercial): This license allows drivers to operate any single or combination of motor vehicles with a combined gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or more. The towed vehicle must have a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or more.
-
Class B (Commercial): This license allows drivers to operate any motor vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or more and may tow a vehicle with a GVWR of under 10,000 pounds.
-
Class C (Commercial): This license allows drivers to operate any single or combination of motor vehicles with a combined GVWR of fewer than 26,000 pounds, transporting hazardous materials, or carrying 15 or more passengers.
-
Class D: This is the most common type of drivers license and allows the holder to operate passenger cars or trucks with a GVWR equal to or less than 26,000 pounds, or any motor vehicle towing another with a GVWR no more than 10,000 pounds. If the towed vehicle is more than 10,000 pounds, the combined GVWR of both should be less than 26,000.
-
Class DJ (Junior Operator): This license permits the holder to operate passenger cars and trucks with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less, or a vehicle that tows another with a GVWR of 3,000 pounds or less. The driver must be at least 16 years of age.
-
Class E: This license allows individuals to operate for-hire vehicles, such as taxis, limos, and livery. This license is the same as the NY standard Class D driver’s license, but the Class E license allows drivers to operate vehicles that can carry 14 passengers or less.
-
Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL): CDLs have three classifications - A, B, and C. Class A includes the operation of most single unit vehicles and vehicle combinations up to the maximum legal weight limits depending on the current endorsements and restrictions the driver has. Class B includes most single unit vehicles that Class E drivers can operate plus buses. Class C includes most single unit vehicles that individuals who hold a Class E driver’s license can operate and trucks and buses that have a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less.
It is important to note that the requirements and qualifications for each class of drivers license may vary.
