A closed fracture, also known as a simple fracture, is a type of bone fracture where the bone is broken, but the skin remains intact. Closed fractures usually occur when excess force is put on the bone, such as a twisting, jarring, or bending motion. Symptoms of a closed fracture may include sudden pain, swelling, and skin redness in the injured area. A closed fracture is diagnosed with a patient history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, or computed tomography (CT) scans. Treatment for a closed fracture may include immobilization with a cast or brace, pain management, and physical therapy to help restore strength and range of motion to the affected area.
