A commuter student is a student who does not live in university-owned housing and lives off-campus. They have to find a method of transportation to get to their classes on campus, which can include biking, walking, public transportation, or using their own car. Commuter students can be of traditional college student age or can refer to adult learners. They are a diverse group, which encompasses full-time students who live with their parents, part-time students who live in off-campus apartments, parents with children at home, and full-time workers. Commuter students face unique challenges while attending college, such as having to wait around campus in between classes and work instead of returning home, having limited time on campus during the day because of driving time, scheduled, and work, and having family and work responsibilities in addition to classes. However, they can still spend time on campus and use amenities like common areas, study halls, eateries, and the library. Commuter students are encouraged to join any of the many student clubs and organizations through Student Activities and/or participate in a wide range of intramural programs through Athletics. They can also take advantage of available resources, like commuter lounges.
