A console table is a long, narrow table that is roughly the height of a dining table and is frequently used as a pier table or to abut a pier wall. It is a table whose top surface is supported by corbels or brackets rather than by the usual four legs. Console tables are usually placed against a wall, but when placed against the back of a sofa, it is called a sofa table. They are versatile pieces of furniture that can be placed nearly anywhere in a home, but they are often thought of as only entryway or hallway furniture. Console tables are frequently used in entryways, living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways. They are perfect for narrow spaces like entryways and hallways because of their unobtrusive presence. Console tables are also used as a temporary bar, vanities, or desks. The main difference between a console table and a side table is that a console table usually stands alone as a focal point and is often at least as decorative as it is functional, while a side table is mainly functional, serving as a surface to place items within easy reach of people sitting on couches, chairs, or beds.
