A contusion, also known as a bruise, is an injury caused by a direct blow to the body that can damage the surface of the skin and deeper tissues depending on the severity of the blow. Contusions are common sports injuries and can occur in anyone. The immediate result of a contusion is pain, swelling, and discoloration. Symptoms of a contusion include discoloration of the skin, swelling, and tightness in the affected muscle or stiffness in the affected joint. Deep-tissue contusions may cause pain and swelling, but if there is no serious damage, they will often get better in a few weeks with home treatment. Initial treatment for a contusion should include rest, icing the affected area for 20 minutes, and applying a compression wrap to help minimize swelling. If there is an accompanying open wound, keep the area clean and bandaged. If you are uncertain about the severity of your condition or your condition does not improve with conservative treatment, please contact your primary care provider or for more specialized care, contact Sports Medicine.
