A D1 licence is a category on a standard driving licence that allows you to drive a minibus with between 9 and 16 passenger seats. The D1 licence is required to drive a minibus that is approved for up to 16 passengers, and the vehicle can be up to 8 meters long. To obtain a D1 licence, you must be at least 21 years old, hold a driving licence for Category B, and pass the relevant D1 minibus theory and practical driving tests. If you passed your driving test before January 1, 1997, you would have been automatically awarded the category D1 on your licence. However, if you passed it on any date after that, youll have to apply to have it added. If you wish to tow a trailer of no more than 750 kg, you can do so with a D1 licence. However, if you want to tow a trailer of more than 750 kg, you need to get a Category D1E driving licence. If you are transporting passengers by minibus for hire or reward, you need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) .
