A Double IPA (DIPA) is a beer style that was created in America and is a hopped-up version of a pale ale. It is also known as an Imperial IPA. The idea for the DIPA was a result of the popularity that India Pale Ales (IPAs) gained in the early 2000s to satisfy the need of hop aficionados. A DIPA is essentially a stronger and hoppier version of an IPA, with an intense aroma and flavor when compared to regular IPAs. The added layering of hops promotes more bitterness, while the extra malt provides a richer texture and is on the caramel/toasted side of the palate. Double IPAs have more malt and hop character when compared to English and American IPAs. The vital stats of a DIPA are ABV: 7.5% – 10%, Bitterness: 60 – 120 IBU, and Color: 6 – 14 SRM.
