A disaster is a serious disruption to the functioning of a community that exceeds its capacity to cope using its own resources. Disasters can be caused by natural, man-made, and technological hazards, as well as various factors that influence the exposure and vulnerability of a community. Disasters can lead to human, material, economic, or environmental hardships, which can be beyond the bearable capacity of the affected society. India as a whole is vulnerable to 30 different types of disasters that will affect the economic, social, and human development potential to such an extent that it will have long-term effects on productivity and macro-economic performance. Disaster management is an integrated process of planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing measures that are necessary for prevention, reduction, readiness, promptness, assessing the severity of the effects, rescue and relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. Natural disasters are large-scale geological or meteorological events that have the potential to cause loss of life or property, such as severe storms, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires. Human-caused disasters are the consequence of technological or human hazards, such as war, social unrest, stampedes, fires, transport accidents, industrial accidents, conflicts, oil spills, terrorist attacks, and nuclear explosions/nuclear radiation.
