A dissolution of marriage, also known as a divorce, is the legal process of terminating a marriage or marital union. It involves the canceling or reorganizing of the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage, thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a married couple under the rule of law of the particular country or state. Unlike an annulment, a dissolution does not "undo" the marriage as if it never existed, but rather it is a legal close to the marriage. To obtain a dissolution or divorce, one spouse must file a divorce petition, also called a petition for dissolution of marriage, and the dissolution of marriage form varies by state. The process can be thought of as being similar to no-fault divorce, meaning that when a couple files for a dissolution, neither of them is required to show any evidence of wrongdoing. The issues commonly involved in a dissolution case are grounds for dissolution, classification and division of assets of the spouses, ongoing obligations to provide for a spouse after dissolution, the welfare of any children of the marriage, and tax consequences.
