A DNI stands for "Do Not Intubate" and is a medical order that tells healthcare professionals not to insert a tube into a patients airway to help with breathing. It means that patients do not want a breathing tube inserted into their trachea, via the nose or mouth, to restore normal breathing. A DNI order is usually contained within a DNR order, which tells healthcare professionals not to use emergency life-saving procedures, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), chest compressions, breathing tubes, and cardiac drugs, for example, to revive a seriously ill patient if they quit breathing or if their heart stops. A DNI order means that chest compressions and cardiac drugs may be used, but no breathing tube will be placed. DNI orders are an integral part of advance care planning and are authorized by a doctor.
