A dynasty league in fantasy football is a league where you retain most or all of your players from year to year. Unlike traditional redraft leagues, there is no hard reset after the first season, and you carry over all of the players onto your squad into the next year. Dynasty leagues work very similarly to managing a real NFL team in that any transaction or move you make will affect your squad for years to come. The goal of a dynasty league is still very similar to the goal of any traditional fantasy football league, which is to foster a competitive team and give yourself a chance at winning the league outright once playoff time comes. However, dynasty leagues also have a lot of different factors involved, which makes managing them quite unique and much different from other formats. Some key features of a dynasty league include:

  • Rosters: Dynasty rosters are generally deeper than redraft rosters, and you’ll commonly hold 20-30 players (or even more) in a dynasty league.

  • Startup Draft: A dynasty league begins with a startup draft, where all of the available NFL players are drafted, just like a regular fantasy league.

  • Trading: Trading players and future draft picks are allowed for most or all of the year in dynasty leagues.

  • Keeper League: Dynasty leagues are often referred to as keeper leagues, as you keep most or all of your players from year to year.
