Ethical non-monogamy (ENM) is a relationship structure where all involved parties consent to have multiple romantic or sexual relationships. It is an umbrella term that encapsulates many nontraditional types of relationship structures in which people have multiple romantic partners. ENM is grounded in consent and mutual trust, and cheating ignores those things completely. ENM relationships require effort and commitment from all partners involved, and people in ENM relationships experience greater trust, honesty, intimacy, and even friendship toward their partners, as compared to people in other types of relationships. Communication is essential in ENM relationships, and people must become comfortable with talking openly about their feelings, needs, and desires, as well as being attentive to other peoples. ENM is not an excuse for cheating, and it is also not an unhealthy relationship model (in relation to monogamy) as it involves open and honest communication.
