An EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) is a type of health plan that offers in-network coverage only. This means that services are covered only if you go to doctors, specialists, or hospitals in the plans network, except in an emergency. EPOs are usually more pocket-friendly than PPO plans, but they can have many limits on the doctors or hospitals you can use. If you choose to get care outside of your plan’s network, it usually will not be covered. EPO members may be required to select a Primary Care Provider (PCP), but they dont need referrals for specialty care. EPOs can be a happy medium between an HMO and a PPO, offering more flexibility than an HMO because there’s no need for a referral from your PCP to receive specialist care. However, EPOs are not as well-known as HMOs or PPOs.
