Expository text is a type of non-fiction text that is meant to inform or teach the reader something. It is always fact-based and uses reliable sources to expose the truth about a topic. Expository texts are common in academic subjects such as science, history, and social sciences. They use different text structures and more complex grammar to convey information than narratives, and proficiency with narratives and basic level reading skills do not ensure success with academic text comprehension. Drops in reading performance around grade 4, when expository texts are introduced, are frequently noted. Explicitly teaching text structure beforehand improves students’ understanding when reading, helps them better locate and organize information, and results in improved identification and recalling of the text’s main ideas. Expository texts typically follow one of five formats: cause and effect, compare and contrast, description, problem and solution, and sequence.
