A FibroScan is a non-invasive diagnostic device used to measure liver scarring or fibrosis caused by a number of liver diseases. It is a quick, painless, and easy exam that allows doctors to determine the state of a patients liver health. The FibroScan is a special ultrasound technology that measures liver stiffness (hardness) and fatty changes in the liver. It is similar to a conventional ultrasound exam and provides a non-surgical alternative to the traditional liver biopsy to assess liver damage. During the scan, a probe is placed on the skin over the liver, and the device sends a vibration through the liver, measuring the speed of the vibration to determine the stiffness of the liver. The stiffness of the liver indicates whether or not scarring is present and can also indicate the extent of the scarring. The FibroScan is used to help diagnose or monitor the progression of diseases affecting the liver, such as excess alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and iron overload. The exam is painless, non-invasive, and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. The results are immediate and are interpreted by a physician according to the patients history and underlying disease. To prepare for a FibroScan, it is important to have the examination on an empty stomach and not eat anything for at least three hours prior to the examination. Patients should wear comfortable clothes that will allow access to the right side of their rib cage.
