A genus is a taxonomic rank in biological classification that is above species and below family. It groups together species that share common attributes, structural similarities, or evolutionary relationships. In the scientific naming system called binomial nomenclature, the genus forms the first part of a species' two-part Latin name (e.g., Homo in Homo sapiens), and its name is always capitalized. A genus can include one or more species that are closely related to each other.
