A Government Gateway ID is a series of up to 12 digits or characters that you use alongside your password to access the UK governments secure online services, including the HMRC portal. It is a unique identifier that allows you to access government services online. The Government Gateway was developed to register for online services provided by the UK Government, such as obtaining a driving license, filing taxes, and accessing other government services.
If you created a Government Gateway account when you registered for Self Assessment, VAT, or any other HMRC service, your Government Gateway user ID will have been sent to you by email or post at that time. If you forget your user ID, you can try searching your email inbox and folders using the words ‘Government Gateway user ID’ . If this does not produce the required results, you can use HMRC’s ‘Problems signing in’ webpage. If you still cant find your user ID, you can contact the relevant helpline number for the service you are trying to access.
If you forget your password, you can reset your Government Gateway account password by providing your Government Gateway user ID and the email address you used to create the account. Depending on which service the account is used for, you will also need to provide certain information to confirm your identity, including your name and address, date of birth, and National Insurance Number.
