A Grade 2 listed building is a structure in the United Kingdom that is considered to be of special architectural or historic interest and is included on a register of protected buildings. The Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission lists buildings in England and Wales under three grades:
- Grade I: buildings of exceptional interest.
- Grade II*: particularly important buildings of more than special interest.
- Grade II: buildings that are of special interest.
Grade II listed buildings are the most common, making up 91.7% of all listed properties, and are deemed to be of special interest. Most listed residential homes fall within the brackets of buildings erected prior to 1 July 1948, meaning that when the owner is looking to carry out historical building renovation work, they must acquire the consent of the local council. Listing means there will be extra control over what changes can be made to a buildings interior and exterior, and owners will need to apply for Listed Building Consent for most types of work that affect the special architectural or historic interest of their home.
