A grouch bag is a small pouch or purse where one can keep their money or valuables safe. The term is believed to have originated from vaudevillians who carried their money in a small chamois bag around their necks. The implication is that one grouches when spending money. Grouch bags were often worn beneath the clothing of traveling performers to conceal their valuables. Nowadays, the term "grouch bag" is also used to refer to fashion accessories such as faux fur checkerboard pattern bags and tote bags.
