In the military, a gunner is a soldier who operates a crew-served weapon, such as an artillery piece, or a soldier in the British artillery. Gunners can also be found in armored, reconnaissance, or mechanized units, where they occupy a dedicated gun position in a military vehicle. In infantry platoons, a gunner is a specialist trained in using machine guns or automatic rifles. In the Canadian Armed Forces, gunners are responsible for the operation, maintenance, and use of artillery systems, including howitzers, mortars, radars, acoustic systems, uncrewed aerial systems, and armored fighting vehicles. Gunners work closely with other members of the combat arms, such as the Armoured, Infantry, and Combat Engineers, as well as all other support arms on and off the battlefield. Being a gunner is a physically demanding role that requires training in soldiering, weapons, tactics, communications, leadership, and driving.
