A haploid is a cell that contains a single set of chromosomes. In humans, only the egg and sperm cells are haploid, while most cells in the body are diploid, meaning they have two copies of each chromosome. Haploid cells are produced through a particular kind of cell division called meiosis, where the genetic material of the parent cell is divided up twice, resulting in these haploid cells with only one set of chromosomes. The number of chromosomes in a single set is represented as n, which is also called the haploid number. In humans, n = 23. Gametes contain half the chromosomes contained in normal diploid cells of the body, which are also known as somatic cells. Some organisms, like algae, have haploid portions of their life cycle, while other organisms, like male ants, live as haploid organisms throughout their life cycle.
