A hefeweizen is a type of German wheat beer that originated in Bavaria, Germany. The name "hefeweizen" translates to "yeast wheat" in German, and the beer is essentially an unfiltered wheat beer with yeast in it. Hefeweizens are characterized by a strong presence of banana and clove, even vanilla or bubblegum, in the aroma and flavor, which are created by the Bavarian yeast strains used to ferment them. They are typically made up of more than 50% wheat, and are cloudy and slightly white in appearance, with a thick foamy head. Hefeweizens are crispy, sweet, fruity, and highly drinkable, and usually fall in the 4.0 to 7.0% ABV range.
