The HokieBird is the official mascot of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was created in 1981 and has retained its current appearance since 1987. The HokieBird is a large anthropomorphic turkey and has become a cultural phenomenon, making appearances in media, childrens books, and public events. The term "Hokie" generally refers to a Virginia Tech student.

The official definition of "Hokie" is "a loyal Virginia Tech Fan". The term "Hokie" was created by a student named O.M. Stull in the 1890s, who won a $5 prize for coming up with a new spirit cheer, now known as “Old Hokie” . The original cheer went: Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy. Techs, Techs, V.P.I. Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah. Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia. Rae, Ri, V.P.I. Later, an “e” was added to “Hoki” to make “Hokie,” and “Team! Team! Team!” was attached to the end.

The HokieBird was originally called the Gobbler and was beginning to be called "the Hokie mascot," "the Hokie," and "the Hokie Bird" when it underwent a drastic makeover in 1982. The current HokieBird conveys power and strength and debuted in September 1987.

Students who dress as the HokieBird remain anonymous until commencement, when they reveal their secret by wearing HokieBird feet during the procession into Lane Stadium. It is unknown how many students serve as HokieBirds during any given school year, and the entire try-out process remains a secret.
